Middlesbrough Daily Exchange, 3 March 1887
At 10.30 this (Saturday) morning the Mayor of Middlesbrough (Mr Amos Hinton) opened the Cash Railway at Messrs John Hedley & Co.'s noted drapery establishment, Linthorpe-road, Middlesbrough. The mayor's daughter was the first purchaser, and the money and check was despatched to the cash desk, and returned with the change in a very short time, and was handed to Miss Hinton amid loud cheers from the large company assembled. The Mayor said, Messrs Hedley and Co. have this morning introduced to the Middlesbrough public one of the most ingenious contrivances that it had been his pleasure to witness, and which was called a Cash Railway. The cash received from the customer was put into one of the balls, which was then closed up and sent along the rails to the cashier...
He then said that having sent the money ball rolling, he hoped it would roll merrily all through the year, not only in that establishment, but in every tradesman's in Middlesbrough, and throughout the country. (Loud cheers).
